Stress
Stress is an emotional, mental and physical feeling which causes mental tension. Stress can come from two types:-
- External - from the environment, physiological or social situations.
- Internal - illness or from medial procedure
Stress can come from any event or incident resulting in making you feel frustrated, angry or nervous. When our body reacts to a challenge or any demand stress is caused. Stress is a normal part of our lives, it can be positive, such as keeping you more focused or avoid danger or negative, such as getting worried, angry, scared or frustrated. There are many negative impact on stress such as being bullied, working too hard, losing a job, relationship problems, busy schedule or recent moves. but when stress last for a longer time then it may affect your health.
There are two types of stress:-
- acute stress - This is short-term stress that goes away quickly. You feel it when you slam on the brakes, have a fight with your partner, or ski down a steep slope. It helps you manage dangerous situations. It also occurs when you do something new or exciting. All people have acute stress at one time or another.
- Chronic stress - This is stress that lasts for a longer period of time. You may have chronic stress if you have money problems, an unhappy marriage, or trouble at work. Any type of stress that goes on for weeks or months is chronic stress. You can become so used to chronic stress that you don't realize it is a problem. If you don't find ways to manage stress, it may lead to health problems.
There are many causes of stress such as :-
- Getting married or divorced
- The death of a spouse or close family member
- Retiring
- Having a baby
- Money problems
- Moving
- Having a serious illness
- Problems at work
- Problems at home
There are many steps to reduce our stress and lead a happier life such as :-
- Keep a positive attitude.
- Accept that there are events that you cannot control.
- Be assertive instead of aggressive. Assert your feelings, opinions, or beliefs instead of becoming angry, defensive, or passive.
- Learn and practice relaxation techniques; try meditation, yoga for stress management.
- Exercise regularly. Your body can fight stress better when it is fit.
- Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
- Learn to manage your time more effectively.
- Set limits appropriately and learn to say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life.
- Make time for hobbies, interests, and relaxation.
- Get enough rest and sleep. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events.
- Seek out social support. Spend enough time with those you enjoy.
- Seek treatment with a psychologist or other mental health professional trained in stress management or biofeedback techniques to learn healthy ways of dealing with the stress in your life.
